Abstract
During the 1990s American began to associate premium cigar smoking with status and a privileged life-style. Many new brands of premium cigars were created to satisfy this increased demand. The "cigar boom" was short-lived and many small producers went bankrupt. The remaining independent producers face an uncertain future with increased concerns over health issues and smoking bans and the consolidation of a shrinking market.
