Abstract
Presidential elections in the United States are dominated by the two-party system. Yet, there are no provisions for such a system in the US Constitution. In fact, the Framers of that document explicitly provided for a very distinct presidential election procedure, which they intended to be free of party domination. The paper also explains that, as part of that procedure, the Framers envisioned the Electoral College as preserving Reason in the process --- today they'd probably say 'opps'! This essay provides a comprehensive statement of those original intentions.
