Abstract

Over the past few years the gaming industry of Macau grew at a rapid pace, being the only place in China where gambling is permitted. When the long-running monopoly on the gaming industry was lifted in 2002, foreign investors flocked to Macau and built large hotels and casinos. For a brief period, gaming revenues in Macau surpassed those of Las Vegas, however, recent economic and political issues have caused a major slowdown in gambling revenues for Macau, and some foreign investors have questioned the wisdom of their decisions to enter the market.
