Abstract

Who may practice Admiralty (and Maritime) Law? Maritime Law Practitoners are increasingly becoming aware that personnel who are not specialised in this once revered area of expertise, is now being encroached upon by non specialists.

It is common knowledge that admiralty matters are increasingly being settled outside courts in arbitrations. At the core of this practice are Commercial Arbitrators (who are non lawyers), insurance houses, paralegals, and general practitioners. Containerization is also taking its toll, since cargo is now less damaged. This is leaving the admiralty lawyer without work.

This thought provoking article is aimed at raising a debate on what can be done in bringing back the clout, in this area of legal specialization that was once respected by lawyers involved in this field.
