Abstract

Why did the Industrial Revolution start in England? An economic historian can hardly find any indicators during the Middle Ages that the Albion had potential to modernize before France or Spain. Yet, during the thirteenth century, an irreversible process began on the British Isles that would create all the necessary preconditions for their take-off half a millennium later. This paper explores the evolution of the unique English social and political institutional structures responsible for the rise of western democracy and free market capitalism.
