Abstract

Although the media are replete with contradictory allegations regarding the merit of the recently released "torture memos," it is difficult to find a clear, concise analysis allowing for an independent evaluation. This very short piece (4 pages long) attempts to supply such an analysis of the memos' principal claims. It demonstrates the utter frivolity of the memos' legal reasoning, and concludes by suggesting that their authors' clear professional failures should result in sanctions for professional-ethics violations.

Keywords: torture, guantanamo, bybee, yoo, office of legal counsel
