Abstract
On the basis of statistics compiled by the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, Judge Aldisert concludes that the majority of cases disposed of by the court should have been in a court of inferior jurisdiction. Analysis of the private costs to litigants and lawyers compels an additional conclusion: many lawyers are seemingly unaware of the cost of processing tort cases. The study also points out that, for purposes of law office economics, the time of settlement of a lawsuit is as important as the amount of the settlement.
