Abstract

British Columbia's Commercial Tenancy Act is badly out of date. Enacted in the late 1890s, the Act largely restates English legislation from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Commercial Tenancy Act Reform Project examines the creation of a new and relevant legal framework for an important area of the British Columbia economy. The goal of the project is to publish a final report, including draft legislation and commentary. This consultation paper sets out 58 proposals for reform for public consideration and comment.

Keywords: leases, commercial leases, housing, tenancy, landlord, tenant, Commercial Tenancy Act, distress for rent, Rent Distress Act, business, dispute resolution, shopping centre leases
