Abstract

This paper is a revised version of the introductory chapter to the author’s work The Office and its Stewardship (VDM, 2009). It treats of the same topics in much the same way but in greater detail and without the focus on select essays in the book. As such it makes an argument rather than an introduction; it surveys the rationale behind the common human possession of the office and its stewardship, working up to the thesis that both terms deserve to be terms of the legal art and the basis for forms of action intended to improve accountability and transparency in the conduct of the professions and civil servants, not excluding corporate and other business offices.

Keywords: Office, Stewardship, Dignity, Law, Society
