Labour Values and the Theory of the Firm - Part I: The Competitive Firm (Valeurs de travail et la théorie du producteur - Partie I: L'entreprise sous la concurrence pure et parfaite)

Abstract

This paper is the first part of a Marxian critique of the theory of the firm, focusing on the analysis of labour values. Starting from Adam Smith's example of the deer hunter, marginal analysis is introduced, culminating in the derivation of the Labour Value Function, as the supply curve of the competitive firm, in terms of labour values. The analysis is based on a new definition of labour value, which is Marxian in spirit and respects modern mathematical optimization methods, not found in Marx, and offers a further development and coherent interpretation of Marx's value theory. The analysis is limited to the case of the competitive firm.

Résumé: Cet essai est la première partie d'une critique marxiste de la théorie microéconomique du producteur, au centre de laquelle est l'analyse des valeurs de travail. Commençant avec l'exemple d'Adam Smith du chasseur de gibier et de castor l'analyse marginale est introduit culminant dans la mise en évidence de la fonction de valeurs de travail comme la courbe d'offre d'une entreprise sous la concurrence pure et parfait dont l'ensemble d'arrivées sont des unités de travail. L'analyse est basée sur une nouvelle définition de la valeur de travail, qui est marxiste dans sa genèse et bien adapté aux méthodes modernes d'optimisation mathématique, qu'on ne trouve pas chez Marx. Elle est ainsi un développement avancé et une interprétation cohérente de la théorie marxiste de la valeur-travail. L'analyse est limitée au cas du producteur dans le cadre de la concurrence pure et parfaite.
