Abstract
Many academics may be finding that maintaining their enthusiasm for teaching in today’s more international and corporate like university a challenge. This paper highlights the importance of maintaining your enthusiasm in the face of adversity and outlines strategies to engage and infect your students with the same passion you have for your field of study.
This presentation will outline strategies that have been adopted to instil enthusiasm in the teaching of tax law to business students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. A critical success factor with engaging students in tax law has been fostering an appreciation of its social and political implications. This strategy, combined with infectious enthusiasm for the topic, results in students actually enjoying studying tax law (honestly). Further, explicitly linking ‘content knowledge’ and ‘information literacy’ provides students with the opportunity to find, evaluate and use discipline specific information. It is through these strategies students are inspired with enthusiasm and the skills to continue with life long learning, and thereby ensure that the university is a place of learning.
