Abstract
Capitalism has been the most important force in shaping the fate of the Jews in the modern world. Among Jews, economic success has been a source of both pride and embarrassment. Among their neighbors, it has prompted both affection and abhorrence. Either way, the fate of Western Jewry has long been tied to the moral case for capitalism and the bourgeois society.
