Abstract
This paper takes a critical look at journalism in various EU states, examining journalism practice in Europe and the impact upon coverage of the EU. Building upon these initial observations, the author then compares journalism in different countries based on Weischenberg's model of journalism as a social system. He analyses the standard context, structural context, function context and role context of the media and journalists, coming to the conclusion that, in the majority of cases and contexts, the level of international sychronicity across Europe remains relatively low.
The author concludes that one cannot yet speak of a single type of journalism within Europe. He goes on to recommend a concept of differentiated communicative integration for the EU, as well as alerting the reader to the potential consequences for journalists, the EU as an organisation and PR professionals.
