Abstract

The teaching of admiralty allows a professor to explore a variety of topics and a variety of approaches to legal problems. One the topics included in this overview are the misuse of legal concepts, giving as an example the concept of "admiralty court" or "admiralty side" that have caused courts unnecessary confusion over matters of jurisdiction and procedure. In particular, the problem of hybrid claims, removal, and the meaning of the Jones Act's election provision, are explained. The Article then discusses the intersection of statutes and judge-made law and gives examples from wrongful death, life salvage, and deviation.

Keywords: Admiralty, Maritime, Wrongful Death, Salvage, Deviation
