Abstract

What a long strange journey it has been. As this is published, the 2008 presidential election will be just days away. Much has been written about the unprecedented and historic nature of this election with its breaking of race and gender barriers, the nomination a candidate who would be oldest elected president, and strident shouts of “Change!” from both camps.

One area that has not gotten much mass media attention are the candidates’ perspectives on technology, intellectual property, privacy and other issues of importance to the information community. However, after a review of position papers, media and blogger reports, and a bi-partisan discussion that took place after the Democratic Convention, some pictures do begin to emerge. Much of the focus has been on patent and copyright issues as part of broader concerns about the economy and international trade. But there is enough to get a sense of the candidates’ perspectives these issues.
