Abstract
Women face special complications in securing social security entitlements. This chapter reviews some selected aspects of Australian social security law and policy to isolate the extent to which discrimination and disadvantage is a product of social security rules or external social factors. It is concluded that current rules create difficulties mainly due to external social forces, but it draws together a number of practical suggestions which social security recipients and their legal advisors might take to secure entitlements.
