Abstract

This teaching case is designed as part of a MBA/Graduate or Undergraduate elective course in the area of System Analysis and Design. A key barrier in teaching System Analysis and Design courses is the lack of good hands-on and interactive cases in the classroom. As most businesses begin to put increasing emphasis on the formal modeling of business processes and their underlying information processing systems, the process oriented system design emerges as a prevailing model in enterprise practice. Process-based approaches have therefore become an important component in the system design and analysis curriculum. Through this hands-on lab exercise, we aim to help business students to understand the fundamental knowledge of a company’s business processes, and to develop the ability to define, execute, manage and refine processes that involve human interaction, such as placing orders, and handle dynamic process rules and changes, not just simple, static flows.
