Abstract

The Hebrew prophets were not preoccupied with a mystical reality abstracted from everyday experience. For them, the moral law was a living presence here on earth, entrusted to human stewardship. They often spoke God's words, but they directed their rhetorical fire towards worldly human conduct. "Far from dealing in abstractions floating above the concrete details of daily life, all of them were always plunging down and dirty into the world around them." A review of Norman Podhoretz, The Prophets: Who They Were, What They Are (Free Press, 2002).

Keywords: Bible, Prophecy, Isaiah
