The Impact of Earthquake on Expectant Mothers & Infants vis-a-vis Micro Insurance: Case Study from Kutchh, India

Abstract

Gujarat (India) faced massive earthquake in 2001. Being epicenter, the Kutchh region was most affected. 20,000 lost life, several thousand injured and property loss of billions had long term effect on women, children and children to be born thereafter. This study investigates economic impact on women & children by quantifying while social impact in qualitative terms. With the help of Insurance Company, Micro Finance Institutes, few NGOs offered protection through micro insurance to the weker section of the society including women & children. We have collected data of affected population and compared two set of samples; under the insurance cover and without insurance cover. The study is undertaken from 2001 till 2009. We used secondary data in terms of government policies, records and working of such institutes referred herein before, while primary data collected through questionnaire. We analysed the data using appropriate questionnaire to draw conclusion the effect of such measures on health, employment, income, education and ownership amenities & properties. We also studied shared experience of NGO workers, beneficiaries and public servants to find effectiveness of the service delivery and quality. We recommended two class of suggestions, perpetual measures & measures in emergency. The study conclude with series of corrective measures to protect women & children.
