Abstract

Based in the refugee camp Sputnik 22 (near Nazran, Ingushetia), which was liquidated in 2006, this narrative essay records a journey to Chechnya in 2004 in the midst of the second Russo-Chechen war. Through historical reflection, ethnography, and textual analysis, "Behind the Wall of the Caucasus" historicizes the life-stories of Chechens and other Muslim peoples of the Caucasus within the war-torn aftermath of Soviet Union's fall.
