Abstract

The acute problem of inefficient and ineffective utilization of scarce resources in the private sector in Nigeria has engendered retarded growth in production and profitability in all ramifications. This paper examines the critical issues militating against genuine capacity building and management in the modern Nigerian private sector using Calabar metropolis as a study area. It examines what capacity building and management connotes and the extent to which this all-important managerial function is recognized and practiced. The thrust of this study using the least squares regression was to pinpoint the salient obstacles to capacity building and management in Calabar metropolis, their impact on revenue and profits. It was found that capacity utilization was low. The paper made necessary recommendations with a view to stopping the ugly trend ultimately.
