Abstract

This paper intends to bridge the gap between narratology and pragmatics through a semiotic analysis of the concept of narrative competence. Using a number of concepts developed in the field of pragmalinguistics, in addition to Greimas's theory of modality, we undertake an examination of such narratological notions as narrative enunciation, voice, and person, and a reinterpretation of classical theories of narrative. Semiotic tools which have proved their validity for the analysis of action and agents generally are here contemplated as equally valid for the study of narrative fiction.

_______
