Abstract

The purpose of this intervention was to investigate the effectiveness of Mutual Intergroup Differentiation Model on altering youth groups’ intergroup enmity in the context of East Timor. The model encourages groups working together in a complementary fashion by recognizing and valuing mutual parties within the context of an interdependent cooperative task or common, superordinate goals. Participants consisted of members of Taibesi and Becora youth groups which have long history of violent conflict. The intervention lasted for eight consecutive days and its primary measures were semi-structured interviews and observation. Findings indicated that mutual intergroup differentiation model worked on the platform of trust, interactive problem solving, and superordinate goals in mixed-member groups.
