Abstract
The following paper describes the development of the well-known "interpretatio contra proferentem" rule, from its origins in Roman Law, throught the reinterpretation in Medieval Law, arriving to its modern incorporation in the main Western Civil Codes (Mainly, Codification in Europe and Latin America). The diverse contents, meanings and functions ascribed to the Rule throughout the historical development offer elements to understand its changed roll in the current legal scenario, in which the "interpretatio contra proferentem" provides some traces for a systematic interpretation of general Contract Law and special Contract Law regarding standard term contracts and consumer contracts.
