Abstract
Marriage is the most important, foundational moral institution of society, but in recent years, same-sex unions have sought to be included within its definition. However, including same-sex unions within the definition of marriage transforms the definition and the morality of marriage. This article discusses what the morality of marriage is, first by introducing the paradigm of relationship division into kinship and strangers. Ten moral influences of marriage are listed and described, and the legitimacy of defending marriage’s morality is explained. The article describes eleven moral values and precepts that marriage embodies, as well as the important function of channeling sexuality. The morality of gay and lesbian relationships is discussed, as well as their potential impact on transforming marriage by being included. The article concludes that in order to protect marriage, morality, and society, same-sex unions should not be included within the definition of marriage.
