Abstract

Colombia was the first country to sign the Protocol of Nagoya. The treaty seeks to establish an effective international regime on access to genetic resources and benefit sharing (ABS). However, only enter into force when 50 countries ratify it. What is its importance to our country?

The article suggests that rather than create more barriers and excessive controls for access to genetic resources, there should be a simple mechanisms that allows use these resources legally. This will enable conservation, sustainable use, and subsequent fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources.
