Abstract
This presentation to the Thomas M. Cooley Legal Authors Society describes three joyous stages in the publication of legal scholarship. They are identified as, first, the joy of birth (seeing your words in print). Second, the joy of recognition accorded the author (all too fleeting). And third, the joy of becoming an authority (due to the ripple effect of subsequent citations in the footnotes of others). Despite the drudgery of research, the tedium of writing, and the agony of awaiting editors’ decisions to publish or return your manuscript, new law teachers should strive to break into print as early as possible to experience the joys of publishing.
