Abstract

For mass media scholars, diversity in media studies has articulated well the issues of representation and misrepresentation, highlighting patterns of inclusion and exclusion of mediated subjects. Connecting this line of inquiry with mass communication practices remains a challenge for both educators and practitioners. This article proposes an analysis of diaspora and acculturation theories in the context of ethnic communities to explore contexts in which "cultural media" serve as conduits for shaping a vital part of the messages about diversity.
