Abstract

Professor Brian D. Shannon, Charles “Tex” Thornton Professor of Law, Texas Tech University School of Law; Faculty Athletics Representative, Texas Tech University; and Big 12 Conference Representative and President, 1A FAR Board, discusses what a Faculty Athletics Representative position entails. This paper was presented at a session of the 2012 Southeastern Association of Law Schools’ conference, along with presentations by four other law professors who serve as FARs for their universities. Shannon provides background information about himself, how he found himself serving in the current FAR position, and the challenges and opportunities for a new FAR. Throughout the article, Professor Brian D. Shannon offers valuable insight about the position but also how Texas Tech University has approached the responsibilities of meeting with the rules of the NCAA and the Big 12 Conference.
