Abstract

This paper examines the impact of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950’s and 60’s on the contemporary social, economic and political predicament of African Americans. This evaluation is descriptive in nature and focuses primarily on the current social and economic reality. This paper is an attempt to examine and better understand changes in the social and economic predicament of African Americans since the 1950’s and 60’s relative to white Americans. Given the success of the Civil Rights Movement, one would reasonably expect to observe an improvement in the performance of social and economic indicators among African Americans relative to whites. This paper seeks to determine if this in fact has been the case. If this has not occurred, it is important to identify factors which have impeded progress towards achieving social, economic and political equity.
