Abstract
These remarks introduced Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, principal speaker at the 2003 dedication of the Robert H. Jackson Center in Jamestown, New York. Fifty years earlier, Rehnquist was one of Justice Jackson’s law clerks at the Supreme Court of the United States.
This introduction covers Chief Justice Rehnquist’s biography and the process by which Justice Jackson came to meet and hire Mr. Rehnquist. Starting in 1948, Jackson visited northern California every summer. In 1951, he visited his former law clerk Phil C. Neal at Stanford Law School, where Neal was a professor. At Neal’s initiative, Jackson interviewed Stanford law student William Rehnquist and soon hired him as a law clerk.
