Abstract

As a subject, Professional Responsibility has received a tremendous amount of attention in the last thirty years. Since the early 1960s, and more recently in the wake of the Watergate scandal during the Nixon administration, the American Bar Association has expended significant resources in promulgating different standards relating to the regulation of lawyers. During this time, we have seen Professional Responsibility become a mandatory course in all ABA accredited law schools. Many states now require that applicants pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam. And, many states now require that practicing lawyers complete a minimum number of hours of instruction in Professional Responsibility as part of their continuing legal education requirements.
