Abstract
In this contribution I analyze the individual characteristics of a sample of entrepreneurs, founders of 104 new technology-based firms established after 2002, in the Emilia Romagna region in Italy. Relying on 166 face-to-face interviews, I provide some evidence on the motivations underlying their decisions to become entrepreneurs, on their psychological characteristics, and on their developed abilities and skills. In addition, I also assess and describe their perceptions of the environmental support, of the market heterogeneity and industry opportunities. Different patterns emerge when entrepreneurs are compared in terms of career paths, organizational affiliation and educational levels.
