Abstract

This essay introduces the 2011-2012 Meador Lecture Series on Boundaries. The essay introduces the concept of “boundaries” generally, and also makes the argument that frequently legal decision-making depends upon the application of a rule – which may not itself be defensible against other plausible rules – to create a specific criterial boundary for an otherwise vaguely-bounded concept. The essay then briefly considers the coherence and necessity of this method of legal decision-making.

Keywords: boundaries, concepts, vagueness, rules, limits, sorites paradox
