Abstract
English Abstract: Using cash flow per employee we test the hypotheses that a) small firms are more efficient in terms of success and b) less efficient in terms of risk. Splitting up a sample of Austrian firms into size classes, success is measured by the mean and the median of the distribution of cash flow per employee in each size class, risk is measured by the standard deviation and the interqartile range. Regressions on data for 1989-1996 show that we can accept the first hypothesis and reject the second: small firms are subject to greater risk but do not get compensation for this by higher returns.
