Abstract

This essay responds to Professor William E. Butler’s lecture titled 'Russia and the WTO System: Law, Regionalism, Politics' delivered at the University of Memphis, School of Law on September 27, 2013. The essay makes several observations, each of which is meant to be a tentative sketch of arguments and suggestions for further research. The first is a "macro"-level exercise in historicizing patterns of regionalism in the post-Soviet space. The second is an observation about a shift away from traditional models of positivist international law in the study of regional trade integration towards new hybrid models of interdisciplinarity.
