Abstract

This is an examination of the culture history of Ukraine, its relation to Russia, the Soviet Union and European imperialism and colonialism. The geography, religion and linguistic divisions of the area of Ukraine must be considered in any assessment of its future. This paper places the debate over Russian or European spheres of influence today over the country in a historical and cultural perspective.
