Abstract
The publication of this book marks the first attempt by anyone on either side of the Atlantic to offer a systematic introduction to the application of Marxist social theory to law. While the text is described by its author as "an introductory work" V), it goes far in explicating and analyzing the key concepts of Marxist theory in the context of law and legal institutions. Marxism and Law is by no means an apologia for the insights into law offered by Marxist critics: much that will be recognized as traditional in Marxist theory, whether of an empirical (E. P. Thompson) or theoretical (L. Althusser) perspective, is subjected to strict scrutiny and critique. In short, Collins has achieved a coherent and well-reasoned ordering of the most salient insights of Marxist analyses of law.
