Abstract

The Battersea Arts Centre (BAC) in London specialises in innovative theatre, and is the pioneering organisation that created Scratch theatre, a process of creating new theatre pieces in residence and trying small parts of them out on live audiences which provide feedback at very early stages of a piece’s development. As part of the Digital R&D Fund for the Arts, BAC partnered with The Arts Collective and technology partner NativeHQ to create an online platform called Scratchr which takes portions of the Scratch process and moves them online. In this report, qualitative interviews and observation are supplemented with quantitative evidence to describe the development of Scratchr, the changing roles of artists and producers in the Scratch process, and the outcomes of the project.
