Abstract

English Abstract: The modernization of the family is a complex social process, inseparable from a number of other processes such as the sentimentalization, privatization and individualization. In the context of higher education, the teaching and learning of this topic face multiple challenges and resistance because the students represent themselves examples of socio-cultural and family diversity. The family institution exists in all cultures yet each culture defines their roles, determines specific functions and values. This poster presents and summarizes results of the teaching and learning experience in “Sociology of the Family” [SOC2410], a compulsory course in the Sociology curriculum and optional for the Sciences of Education at the University of Évora (Portugal), in the academic year 2014/15. The starting point was the analysis of different cultural objects that cross the daily life of both students and teachers (e.g. literary works, music, movies, plays, TV series and programs, paintings, sculptures, etc.). Based on a detailed analysis of the songs “Postal dos Correios” (Rio Grande, 1996) and “Family Portrait” (Pink, 2001), this poster explores the process of the family modernization, drawing up the “family portraits” that allows one to discuss the family as a sociocultural construction.
