Abstract

Organisations are subsystems of larger societal systems. The workplaces they provide reflect the communities and broader society of which they are a part. The subsystems of an organisation can be described as communities in themselves. If we think of workplaces as communities, it is not difficult to understand that workplaces are not perfect. There is much conflict and diversity between communities but so too is there much conflict within communities: They are hierarchical formations, structured upon lines of differential power relations, most notably as feminists have argued, upon lines of gender, but also upon lines of ethnicity, age, class (if these social categories are not in themselves grounds for exclusion) and other personal attributes (Crawford 2002: 110).

Keywords: restorative justice, workplace, employment disputes, conflict
