Abstract

I believe that as of today, we are all well into our journey for our own "Ithaka", i.e., a journey towards a new international convention for the rights of older persons. This journey can be understood as a combination of four different "journeys": a demographic journey –where the world is transforming into an aging world; a social justice journey – under which our understanding of "justice" broadens beyond the economic and into the symbolic; and legal journey – from national to international law; and a "journey" journey – that allows us to realize that the journey never ends. Understanding and realizing these four different human journeys can provide us all with the overall picture regarding our progress towards a new convention. It can also provide the much-needed context for the project that brought us together: the Chicago Declaration. Finally, connecting all four journeys together, provides us with important insights regarding the nature of this historical process towards the establishment of a new convention. It reveals how metaphorically, we are today like a surfer riding on four intersecting waves – waves that, taken together, provide exceptional propulsion for the surfer (and in reality – the convention), and inexorably move it forward.
