Abstract

English Abstract: Tourism’s social impacts have become one of the most studied topics. However, Little is known with regard to specific impacts of specific types of tourists and their behaviours as well as to their tourism management implications. This paper presents the findings of a research project aiming at identifying the social impacts of a specific tourism phenomenon, Spring Break, in Cancun, México. Based on quantitative data obtained from local residents, the study reveals that although the phenomenon in question creates employment opportunities and income for local people, the economic benefits are largely kept by very specific foreign businesses, and very few local people are economically benefitted. Furthermore, the Spring Break’s perceived social impacts on the destination are directly related to tourists’ hedonist behaviours. This paper offers practical implications for tourist management in the destination.
