Abstract

This paper suggests that the Bible supports a very limited civil government. The Bible teaches that the authority of civil government, like all human authority, finds its source in God himself. God grants authority, and authority ungranted is authority denied. It appears that God’s grant of authority to civil government is found in Genesis 9:6, in his command that human beings exact corrective justice for violations against God’s image in human beings.

Keywords: political theology, biblical libertarianism, limited civil authority
