Abstract
We report results for the Oil & Gas Services sector from the Strategy and Performance in the Energy Industry (SCOPE) Survey conducted among professionals in the energy industry (so called “insiders”) to measure their perceptions about specific companies on multiple dimensions of strategic performance. The study includes 16 of the most prominent oil & gas services companies: 1) Baker Hughes, 2) Cameron, 3) Dresser-Rand, 4) FMC Technologies, 5) GE Oil & Gas, 6) Halliburton, 7) Hercules Offshore, 8) MRC Global, 9) National Oilwell Varco, 10) Newpark Resources, 11) Oceaneering, 12) Oil States International, 13) Parker Drilling, 14) Schlumberger, 15) Transocean, and 16) Weatherford. This report includes analysis based on a total of 1,999 individual company evaluations provided by 1,388 O&G industry insiders.
The results reveal that Schlumberger, FMC Technologies and GE Oil & Gas are among the best performers on a majority of the strategic performance dimensions. On the flip side, Transocean and Weatherford are relative underperformers. We also describe the method used to compute the “SCOPE Visibility Index” which provides detailed insights into the visibility of each O&G services company. The results indicate that Halliburton has the highest visibility of 78.0 (on a scale of 0-100), followed by Schlumberger (68.2) and Baker Hughes (66.6). On the other end, Newpark Resources has the lowest visibility (22.0), followed by MRC Global (26.2) and Hercules Offshore (27.0). A comparison of the visibility index to size indicates that although Schlumberger is an over-performer in most of the performance dimensions, its visibility relative to other companies is low. Along this dimension, Halliburton, Baker Hughes, GE Oil & Gas and Transocean are over-performers. In addition to Schlumberger, Newpark Resources, and MRC Global are relative underperformers.
