Abstract
Today’s technology product markets are inherently international. The global character of technology markets underscores the importance of technical interoperability standards in global supply chains and commerce. This paper considers the impact of patents on international technical standardization activities. In particular, it assesses the impact that patents have on individual firm behavior and intra-firm dynamics in the context of international standard-setting and evaluates available options to reduce disparities between large patent holders and firms from less-developed economies.
