Abstract

English Abstract: In this paper the author describes the role of pronouns in constructing text cohesion. The features of the different types of pronouns in Serbo-Croatian (personal, possessive, reflexive, demonstrative, relative, indefinite) are described on the basis of the data from the contemporary standard Serbo-Croatian. The main results are: 1. first and second person pronouns (singular and plural) are used mainly exophorically; they are very frequent in dialogues; in written text they can also be used endophorically; in some examples these pronouns are obligatory because they can function as a subject in first and second person, whereas nouns cannot function in that way; 2. third person pronouns (singular and plural) are primary endophors; they are frequent in narrative and descriptive texts; 3. use of a noun instead of a pronoun as a rule breaks the referential identity; 4. demonstrative pronouns designating proximal relation can be either cataphors or anaphors, while demonstrative pronouns designating medial relation are primary anaphors; demonstrative pronouns designating distal relation are in most cases used as cataphors in a cataphoric-anaphoric complex, together with an anaphoric relative pronoun; 5. demonstrative pronoun taj is the most frequent pronoun and is used in several different ways, among which anaphoraical use predominates. Different uses of pronoun taj and other pronouns are analysed in detail in this paper.
