Abstract

Stem cell research involves destruction of the developing embryo and hence poses issues regarding the sanctity of nascent human life. Jewish law issues related to that matter are discussed. Among those are the parameters of the obligation to engage in medical research, the status of a subvisual fetus, of the fetus in the very early stages of gestation and of a fetus conceived ex utero. Public policy considerations in a pluralistic society are also addressed.

Keywords: stem cell research, bioethics, reproductive rights, medical technology
