Abstract
India and the People's Republic of China, whose telecommunications networks are among the largest in the world, have a number of areas for broadband use ripe for exploration. Already in 2004 with more mobile phone users than any other nation, China was one of the three fastest growing countries in the world in 2003 in terms of broadband penetration and by 2006, it is expected to have more Internet users and broadband than any other country in the world . There are a number of reasons to believe that these two countries may exhibit distinct and varied patterns of broadband diffusion. In this article, we examine in depth the factors that could shape the patterns of diffusion of broadband telecommunications technologies in India and China.
