Abstract

The Cultural Diversity Convention was adopted amidst opposition from USA. The Convention can be viewed as a response to the globalisation and the 'americanisation' of global culture. While some argue that this Convention will only help trade protectionism in the name of cultural diversity it is not clear as to what extent this Convention will promote cultural diversity within nations. The relationship of this Convention with WTO Agreements is also controversial. This Convention will certainly help countries to frame policies to promote national cultural industries but the larger issues regarding cultural diversity remain unanswered by this Convention.
